V. 2-3
For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives.  But, if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband.   So then, if while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress though she has married another man.

This verse is not rocket science. If a “Christian” woman remarries because her husband is dead, that’s okay.  If she remarries while he is alive, that is a “no-no.”  I reiterate, like most pastors, I have quoted these verses in junction with teaching about physical marriage many times.  I am not alone in this.  Now we are going to see the Apostle Paul completely change direction, or does he?

V. 4
Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.

In effect, Paul is saying, in verse 4, that you were married to the Law.  But now, since you accepted Christ, the law is dead to you and you are free to marry another.  You are now “married” to Christ.  Hopefully, at some point, there will be an unequivocal surrender to Christ as Lord in your life.  This “marriage” to Christ did not take place when you were baptized in water.  This “marriage” took place when you asked Christ into your heart of hearts.

When you were married to Christ, “born again,” “saved,” whichever term you prefer, (the terms are interchangeable), there was a merger between you and Christ.  If a man or women jumps out of an airplane, they are in the air.  Yet, as they breathe air, the air is also in them.  The person and the air are in closest possible union. When two pieces of metal are welded together, they actual fuse into one piece of metal. THIS union of two entities is the “baptism” of which Paul is referring to in Romans 6:3-4.  Paul was not talking about water baptism as practiced by new believers, but a perfect union of the believer in Christ and Christ in the believer! Jesus became our substitute, our sins died with Him.  He did it all for us.  His resurrection now becomes our resurrection to new life and beyond, all done through the Cross!
